Gradually declining until the end cam 1 CONC e, life passing out so quietly, the Angel of Death touching him so light 1 CONC ly that the moment of transition could hardly be realized and he passed pe 1 CONC acefully into this last long sleep. 1 CONT His death removes from the ranks one of the most honored and highly respe 1 CONC cted citizens of Scott County. Where during the past sixty odd years he h 1 CONC ad lived a life of industry and thrift and won the respect and friendsh 1 CONC ip of a wide circle of acquaintances. He had an instinctive code of hono 1 CONC r. He was trusted because he was consistently dependable. To know him we 1 CONC ll was to be his friend. To deal with him was to learn to take his wo 1 CONC rd as a written pledge or bond. He was a man of lofty principle and stric 1 CONC test integrity who proved himself worthy of trust and confidence in all re 1 CONC lations of his long and useful career. 1 CONT Nicolas Meyer was born in Theley, Teg, Treves, Rhine Providence, German 1 CONC y, November 4, 1847. It was there he spent his boyhood days and receiv 1 CONC ed his education. In the year 1866, when 19 years of age, he immigrat 1 CONC ed to America landing in New York City. Soon after he went to Rocheste 1 CONC r, N.Y., remaining there for four months. He then came to Minnesota, resi 1 CONC ding at various places until 1868 when he came to Shakopee to accept a pos 1 CONC ition as teacher in the Parochial schools and in what was the School Distr 1 CONC ict 41. June 29, 1869 he was married to Miss Julia Klinkhammer. Four dau 1 CONC ghters were born to this union. They are, Mrs. P. A. Schwartz and Mrs. Ma 1 CONC thew Ross of St. Paul and Mrs. Henry Buestens and Mrs. Mrs. Henry Un 1 CONC ze of Shakopee. Having lost his first wife by death he married a second ti 1 CONC me and on May 3, 1881 he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Catherine Thie 1 CONC s, who survives him. To this union came four sons and seven daughters. T 1 CONC hey are, Nick, the Misses Gertrude, Barbara Cecilla and Isabel at home. M 1 CONC rs. O.R. Potter, Richfield, Minn., Anton C. of St. Paul, and Mrs., Thos. M 1 CONC cLain of Gary, South Dakota, and John, Julia and Mathew, the latter thr 1 CONC ee having preceded their father in death. 1 CONT In 1873, Mr. Meyer opened up a music and book store on Lewis Stree 1 CONC t. He possessed musical talent of a high degree and was a great lov 1 CONC er of classical music and during his earlier years gave many instrument 1 CONC al lessons to aspiring students. For 45 years he was organist and direct 1 CONC or of the choir in St. Mark's church. In 1869 he sold his music and book s 1 CONC tore to Fred Rausch and assumed the duties of Judge of Probate, a positi 1 CONC on to which he had been elected in the fall of that year. Term after te 1 CONC rn he was reelected to this office by the people of Scott county, wh 1 CONC om he continued to serve faithfully and honorably until Jan. 1, 1927, wh 1 CONC en he resigned because of failing heath. He therefore held the office f 1 CONC or a period of 47 years., during all of which time no decision or order ma 1 CONC de by him and appealed from was ever reversed by any court. And so Jud 1 CONC ge Meyer made a record, not only in point of years served but in charact 1 CONC er of service rendered that stands without a parallel in the state of Minn 1 CONC esota. 1 CONT The funeral was held last Monday morning, March 11, from the residence a 1 CONC nd from St. Mark's church of which the deceased had been a faithful memb 1 CONC er throughout his life in Shakopee and for many years one of its trustee 1 CONC s. The hour of service was at 9 o'clock and requiem mass was celebrat 1 CONC ed by Rev. Dean M. Sava. Members of St. John's Benevolent society of whi 1 CONC ch Mr. Meyer had been affiliated for many years and served as an offic 1 CONC er in one capacity or another, attended the funeral in a body. In order t 1 CONC hat they might attend the last sad rites of a former fellow county offici 1 CONC al all the county offices were closed during the services and the fl 1 CONC ag at the courthouse was placed at half-mast. Many and beautiful were t 1 CONC he floral pieces placed upon the bier, the offerings of friends of the fam 1 CONC ily. 1 CONT The funeral was largely attended and the large Edifice of St. Mark's w 1 CONC as filled to capacity by friends and neighbors of the deceased who ca 1 CONC me to pay the last tribute of respect to a good and lovable man. The pall 1 CONC bearers were Frank Huber, Geo. H Vierling, Charles Berens, John B. Ries, T 1 CONC hos. H. Walsh and Dominick Maherus, Interment was in St. Mark's cemete 1 CONC ry and a large concourse of friends followed the body to its final resti 1 CONC ng place as a mark of respect to the memory of the departed. The sympat 1 CONC hy of all who know them goes out to the sorrowing family in their sad bere 1 CONC avement. 1 CONT Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. And Mr 1 CONC s. A.
